The big day has finally arrived.
Residents of Luzerne County can rejoice and be glad.
For tonight, Luzerne County Council will name a controller … well, an interim controller that will hold the job until the end of the year. But a controller none the same.
No longer do county residents have to live in fear that the very existence of the county itself is in danger because of the lack of a controller.
Staff writer Steve Mocarsky will be at the Council meeting as the new controller is picked from a field of six or eight or some amount of candidates. I keep losing count.
Keep your eyes on www.timesleader.com. We will get the pick online as soon as we can.
While the Luzerne County is picking a controller, Penn State coach Bill O'Brien appears reluctant to pick a starting quarterback.
With the Nittany Lions opener against Syracuse just four days away, O'Brien is playing his cards close to the vest.
“At the end of the day, we'd like to try to settle on one,” O'Brien said Tuesday during his regular weekly press conference. “But this being the first game, and since neither has played for us at Penn State, I would say both guys need to be ready to play.”
That should make it fun to see who runs out with the offense for the first series on Saturday.
Penn State beat writer Derek Levarse will have a complete report from O'Brien's and Syracuse coach Scott Shafer's press conferences in tomorrow's edition.
Interested keeping tabs on all the crime in Wilkes-Barre. Or at least all the crime that is reported to the police.
Well, the city of Wilkes-Barre has good news for you then. You can now view all of the city police department's press release on Facebook. Yep, like the department's Facebook page and you, too, could know that Wilkes University security reported someone forced entry into a room at the Dorothy Dickson-Darte Center over the weekend.
Hey, I never said it was going to be exciting. Staff writer Ed Lewis has the complete story.
If the WBPD Blue's new Facebook page doesn't get you excited, perhaps some free adult beverages will.
Staff writer Andrew Seder tells us that Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs will continue its free beer promotion that was scheduled to end of Sept. 1 indefinitely.
Technically, while the beer is free, you do have to be gambling with a Players Card to get the free booze. So perhaps, it might be just as cheap to pick up a six-pack at the corner bar and head home.
Finally, I end with some sad news. Marti Peznowski, a long-time member of The Times Leader family, has passed away.
Peznowski worked in our classified department and will surely be missed by her co-workers and friends in the building. In a business where sometimes it seems that the editorial and advertising departments don't speak the same language, Marti was never to busy to stop and say hello to anyone. Even us newsroom folks.
Our condolences go out to Marti's family, friends and loved ones.
That's it for today.
