WA board says tax hike will be taken out of budget

Wyoming Area School Board members promised to avoid a tax increase in the
1994-1995 budget at Monday night’s meetingThe tentative budget proposal
calls for a 4-mill hike, but board members Jake Sobeski, Gene Thomas and Tom
McGeehan told taxpayers in attendance that it will be adjusted to require no
tax increase.

The proposed budget includes salary increases of 3 percent for teachers and
4 percent for administrators.

Fortunately for the district, the state increased subsidies by $600,000 for
1994-95, said taxpayer association member Charles Mazzarella.

Without the subsidies, the taxes could have gone up 22 mills, Mazzarella
said.

A mill is a $1 tax for every $1,000 of assessed property value. The current
millage is 164. A homeowner with a house assessed at $5,000 now pays $820.

A 22-mill tax hike would mean that same homeowner would pay $110 more. A
4-mill increase would mean $20 in extra taxes.
