WILKES-BARRE — A city man was arrested Monday in connection with the alleged robbery of a convenience store earlier in the day.
Ryan M. McGovern, 25, entered the Turkey Hill store at 335 East Main St. at 2:51 a.m. brandishing a piece of metal and demanding cash, Wilkes-Barre police said.
No one was injured in the incident, in which police said McGovern made off with two cartons of cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash, fleeing toward Scott Street.
About two hours later, a Plains Township resident called police to report a suspicious person sitting on a bench on Second Street.
Police said they arrived to find a man matching the suspect’s description in the Turkey Hill robbery. The individual, determined to be McGovern, had two cartons of cigarettes, currency, change and part of a cash-register till in his possession.
McGovern was arraigned before District Judge Martin R. Kane on two felony robbery charges and committed to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in lieu of $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing before Kane is set for 10 a.m. Oct. 10.
