Santa Claus parade set for Thursday
   
— Santa Claus will arrive in downtown Wilkes-Barre on Thursday during the
annual City of Wilkes-Barre Santa Claus ParadeThe parade will begin at 6 p.m.
after Honorary Grand Marshall Mayor Thomas D. McGroarty joins his family in
lighting the Christmas tree on Public Square. The mayor also will pull the
switch to light the downtown’s “Great White Way,” officially opening the
holiday season in Wilkes-Barre.
    The parade, coordinated by Owen Costello, director of special events, will
start at the corner of South Main and Academy streets and continue north on
South Main Street to Public Square, then proceed to East Market Street and
disburse at the Market Street Square parking lot.
   
Marching bands from Coughlin, GAR and Meyers high schools will participate
in the parade, playing holiday favorites. The parade’s special guest, Santa
Claus, will arrive in an open-air, horse-drawn, old-fashion trolley sponsored
by Boscov’s Department Store.
   
Public Square has been decorated with white lights and Christmas trees.
Mayor McGroarty is asking all downtown business and property owners to help
light up the downtown for the holidays by lining their buildings with white
lights to create the “Great White Way.”
