WILKES-BARRE- Chuck Anstett kicked a 17-yard field goal with nine seconds
left in regulation to give Bishop Hoban a 24-21 come-from-behind victory over
GAR Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The Argents scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to erase a 14-point
deficit.
“We really earned it this week,” said Hoban coach Dave Lapinski. “Our kids
believed in themselves and kept fighting.

“We never gave up. And that makes the win so much better.”

GAR (1-7 overall, 1-5 conference) used three long rushes to take a 21-7
lead into the fourth period. Dave Myers scored on a 38-yard run in the first
quarter and on a 24-yarder in the third. Tom Allen added a 31-yard touchdown
run in the first.

The Grenadiers also had other opportunities. Just before halftime, Myers
had a 19-yard touchdown called back on a holding penalty, and Scott Rapson was
wide left on his 27-yard field goal attempt at the start of the fourth
quarter.

“We got hurt on a couple of things you can’t control,” said GAR coach Tony
Khalife. “But their kids obviously wanted it a lot more than ours did. The
Hoban coaches did an excellent job preparing them for this game.”

After GAR’s missed field goal, Hoban (2-6 overall, 1-3 conference) started
its first possession of the fourth quarter at its 20. Anstett, who had scored
on Hoban’s first play of the game on a 64-yard rush, led his team on a
12-play, 80-yard drive.

The drive was kept alive when Anstett connected with Robert Jones on a
37-yard pass play on a fourth-and-4 from the Hoban 38. Behind the running of
Jason Miller, the Argents got to the GAR 3. Then Scott Murphy ran it in, the
conversion run failed, and Hoban now trailed 21-13.

The Grenadiers then fumbled the following kickoff and Hoban’s Tim Wascavage
recovered on the GAR 13.

Miller rushed the ball twice for the Argents, the latter a 3-yard touchdown
run. Murphy then ran it in on the conversion to tie the game at 21.

With 5:41 remaining, the Grenadiers took over at their own 36. With
starting quarterback Lance Wren- who was on crutches until Friday and hadn’t
practiced all week- at the helm for the first time, GAR failed to mount a
drive and, following a punt, the Argents took over on their 38.

Anstett’s game-winning field goal capped the march and gave the Argents the
victory in front of their homecoming crowd.

“This was a great team effort from both sides, and I’m thrilled we came out
on top in the end,” said Lapinski.

“We were forced into doing some things differently today because of injury,
and Isiah Walker did a commendable job at quarterback,” said GAR’s Khalife.

“But,” he continued, “we all have to get better up here real soon or
there’s going to be some problems.”
