Shavertown’s Mariano Medico, a senior at Holy Redeemer, earned a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AA boys golf medal for the second straight year when he shot 9-over-par, 151 for two rounds at Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center in York Monday and Tuesday.
Medico finished sixth in the 36-player field.
After finishing fifth in the state Class AA tournament last season, Medico shot 77 in Monday’s first round to reach the halfway point of the tournament in seventh place. Medico’s second-round 74 on Tuesday was the sixth best score of the day, but it trailed five of the six players who shot lower scores Monday.
Medico was tied for 10th going to the final nine holes of the tournament. He eagled the par-4, 10th hole on the way to a 1-under-par, 34 that tied for the best back nine score in the AA field on the second day. He had five bogeys on the back nine Monday.
“I was 5-over on the par-3s, which is not going to cut it if you want to win a state title,” Medico told the Times Leader following Monday’s round. “It was my long iron game today.
“I couldn’t hit a long iron on the face of the planet.”
The two-time District 2 champion and three-time state qualifier had a double bogey on 8 Monday, but recovered to par that hole and play the four par-3s in 1-under in the second round.
Fairfield’s Isaiah Logue shot 70-69—139 to win the title.
