Wyoming Valley Barons Basketball, hosted at the Rock Rec Sports Complex, 340 Carverton Road, Suite 100, Trucksville, announces its tryout dates for the 2014 AAU girls and boys season.

Rock Solid Basketball has joined with Backcourt Hoops’ Coach John Bucci and Wilkes-Barre Express to create an AAU basketball program in the Wyoming Valley.

Tryout fee is $25 per player, including a Barons T-shirt. All players are encouraged to attend both tryouts for their age group at no additional cost. Tryouts for the Wyoming Valley Barons 2014 season will held on the following dates:

Girls 4th and 5th grades - Sunday, Nov. 10, Noon to 1;30 p.m.

Girls 6th and 7th grades - Tuesday, Nov. 12, 5:30 to 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 17, Noon to 3 p.m.

Girls 8th and 9th grades - Tuesday, Nov. 12, 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 17, 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Girls 10th and 11th grades - Sunday, Nov. 10, 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Boys 4th and 5th grades - Sunday, Nov. 10, 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Boys 6th and 7th grades - Thursday, Nov. 14, 5:30 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 17, 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Boys 8th and 9th grades - Thursday, Nov. 14, 7 to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 17, 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Boys 10th and 11th grades - Sunday, Nov. 10, 4:30 to 6 p.m.

Wyoming Valley Barons Basketball will utilize The Gun, a basketball shooting machine that improves a basketball player’s shot. It acts as an automatic rebounder, instantly rebounding a made or missed shot and giving a direct return pass for another shot. It has a timing device that can determine the distance and the speed of the player’s return passes, creating situations in which players can develop their shooting skills with game-like intensity. The Gun can fire up to 500 shots per half hour.

Founded in 1888, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest nonprofit volunteer sports organizations in the United States. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs.

The Wyoming Valley Barons AAU Basketball program focuses on hard work, positive attitudes, team-centered play, and the fundamentals of basketball. The Barons coaching staff is comprised of high school coaches, present/former high school and college players.

Teams of 9-10 children per age group, per gender, will be selected. AAU practices start Feb. 23, 2014 with tournament play beginning in late March. Teams travel throughout Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. Cost for 4th-5th graders,who play in four tournaments and one shootout is $360 per player for the season. Cost for 6th-11th graders who play in six tournaments and two shootouts is $500 per player. Fees cover tournament entries, uniforms, insurance, first aid, coaches travel and gym fee.

Director Doug Miller serves as the Barons boys coordinator and also as varsity boys head coach at Dallas High School. Coach Bill Callahan is the assistant director.
