Last week’s homecoming was a huge success thanks to the administration,
teachers, parents, maintenance staff and students.

The Homecoming king and queen, Kevin Shea and Athena Rittenhouse, were
announced at halftime of Saturday’s game.
The Argents, coached by Mr. Dwayne Downing, clicked all afternoon because
of a strong offensive effort by Chris Dickerson, Mike Olintis, and Brian
Ostrowsky.

Senior Gerry McGroarty booted his way into the state record books by
kicking a 64-yard field goal to close the 52-0 win against Bishop Hafey. The
kick was longer than the NFL’s longest field goal. The feat shatters the
58-yard record set last year by a Johnstown player. The national high school
record of 68 yards was set by a Nevada player in 1985.

McGroarty’s previous long had been 54 yards. He humbly credited the
offensive line, snapper Shayne Hansen and holder Brad Chukinas. Gerry, a
double-sport star, swims for the Argents. He has not committed to a college,
but it is safe to say that Gerry will succeed at whatever Division I school he
chooses. He is the son of Gerry and Catherine McGroarty, Wilkes-Barre.

Youth Salute is a national program dedicated to recognizing outstanding
high school seniors. It is sponsored locally by Rygiel Studios. Each year,
Bishop Hoban has numerous students participating in this event. However, this
year, we are proud to announce that senior Kathleen Drosey was selected as the
grand prize winner in the region.

The Greater Wyoming Valley Youth Salute Youth Leader award is given in
recognition of high scholastic honors and leadership ability given by the
National Council on Youth Leadership. This achievement earned Kathleen an
all-expense-paid trip to the Town Meeting On Tomorrow Leadership Conference at
Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 11-14.

This national conference will allow Kathleen to interact with youth and
adult leaders from across the country, discuss future issues and challenges,
participate in sessions led by prominent motivational speakers as well as
Youth Leadership board members. The conference closes with a formal banquet
where scholarships will be awarded based on achievements and interviews.

Kathleen says: “It is an honor and a privilege to be chosen to represent
the area. I look forward not only to meeting influential people, but also to
making new friends from around the country. I know that I am going to leave
St. Louis with leadership skills to help me in college and beyond.”

Kathleen is the daughter of Victor and Kathy Drosey of Hanover Township.

Bridget Keating is a senior at Bishop Hoban High School, Wilkes-Barre.
