KINGSTON — District Judge Paul Roberts has announced he is stepping down from the bench and running to be mayor of Kingston.

Longtime Kingston Mayor Jim Haggerty will not seek re-election. Instead, Haggerty will run for the seat Roberts is vacating.

According to a press release, Roberts was born and raised in Kingston, graduated from Wyoming Valley West High School, patrolled the streets of Kingston for 10 years as a police officer, and spent the last 29 years as district judge.

“I’m ready, willing, and able to continue the progress of the last 20 years and to continue to make Kingston the premier community and place to live in Northeastern Pennsylvania,” Roberts said.

Roberts has decided to run with four incumbent council members: Bob Thompson, Sandy Kase, Anthony Dicton, and Rob Jacobs.

“We have great parks, our streets are paved and repaired regularly, we have a state-of-the-art recreation center, and our streets are lined with beautiful shade trees. … I will proudly continue that tradition,” Roberts said.
