LEHMAN TWP. — At the 55th annual Luzerne County Fair, you’ll be able to take part in all your customary favorites — fried food, amusement rides and … sharks?

The fair opens at 4 p.m. Wednesday and continues until Sunday at the Luzerne County Fairgrounds.

While the fair is still home to all of the things you’ve come to expect, it will also feature a few new exhibits that should please animal lovers.

HAAI Inc., of Myakka City, Fla., is bringing in a 5,000-gallon aquarium to show off sharks acquired from aquariums nationwide. The exhibit will teach fairgoers about the famous predators, including conservation efforts and myths about them.

Meanwhile, Stingray Encounter LLC will allow visitors to get up close and personal with the docile relative of the shark.

And over at Nerger’s Tiger Show, the stars will be — what else — tigers that were born in captivity.

Brenda Pugh, the fair’s chairperson, said last year’s fair brought in 39,000 people.

“We had one nasty, rainy day last year,” Pugh said. But on years without rain, Pugh said the fair attracts around 50,000 during its run.

The fair is also a place to compete — that is, if you think you make the best apple pie or angel food cake, or if you’d like to submit your livestock for 4-H titles.

If that’s not your thing, there will be different performances every night, featuring acts like Rick K. & The Allnighters and Walker Hayes.

Tickets each day are $10 per person, with children under 2 admitted free. Seniors can take advantage of Thursday’s Senior Night. They can get in for only $5.

Also on Thursday, $2 from each regular admission and $1 from each senior ticket sold will be donated to the Red Cross to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey.
