HAZLETON — A Hazleton bank was robbed just after 11 a.m. Friday by a man who crashed his car in Kingston about nine hours later, police say.

The robbery occurred at a Community Bank branch at 540 Broad St., authorities reported.

The robber passed the teller a threatening note and fled with an unspecified amount of money.

Hazleton police, working with Butler Township police, were able to identify a residence frequented by the suspect.

Officers conducted surveillance at that location and were eventually able to identify the suspect as Robbee Gundry, 55, of York, police say.

Police also learned Gundry was driving a light green Nissan Altima, and issued an alert to area departments.

At about 8 p.m., Kingston officers spotted the vehicle being driven erratically by Gundry on Wyoming and Pringle streets, where the suspect crashed into a wall of a gas station, a report states.

Police say Gundry appeared to be intoxicated and spit in an officer’s face as he resisted arrest, but he was overcome and handcuffed.

When he was arrested, authorities note he was wearing the same shirt as when he robbed the bank.

Hazleton officers picked up Gundry in Kingston and plan to charge him with robbery, theft by unlawful taking and related counts.
