Two Wilkes-Barre men were sentenced to two years on probation for stealing funds from the American Federation of Government Employees (AGFE) Local 1699 Union, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

United States District Court Judge Richard P. Conaboy sentenced Michael Evans, 57, and William Uggiano, 60, for stealing funds from the union.

Evans was ordered to pay $65,775 in restitution to the union, and Uggiano was ordered to pay $7,350.

Evans and Uggiano served as the president and treasurer, respectively. Authorities said they stole more than $68,000 in union funds from Local 1699’s credit union between March 2013 and December 2015.

The case was investigated by the United States Department of Labor, Office of the Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorney Evan Gotlob prosecuted the defendants.
