HAZLETON — A man was shot Saturday night in an incident police are still investigating.

City police received numerous calls around 11 p.m. reporting that multiple gunshots were fired. Initially, police believed that the gun shots came from the area of East 7th Street and Hayes Street.

Additional reports indicated the shots were exchanged between two vehicles, an unidentified sedan and SUV, both traveling in the area of North Laurel Street and West Tamarack Street. Officers responded immediately and began searching the area, but were unable to locate any vehicles or victims.

Officers were in the area checking for evidence on North Bennet Court between East Oak Street and East Maple Street, when they located a residence that sustained minor damage.

At approximately 10:40 p.m., police responded to the 200 block of South Pine Street and discovered a victim, a 34-year-old male from Hazleton, who sustained a “non-life threatening” gunshot wound to the lower leg. He was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton.

The incident is under investigation, but police believe that the victim’s gunshot wound may have been the result of a self-inflicted accidental discharge.
