NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY

WEST HAZLETON — Last week 107 West Hazleton Junior High School students
joined an elite society. They were inducted into the National Junior Honor
Society.

Vice Principal Robert Stefanovich brought the program to the school to
recognize hard-working students. “We have recognition for sports. We need it
for academics too, especially in this age group. NJHS is special.” The society
allows students to be part of an organization that until now was limited to
high school seniors.
The school is the first of three district junior highs to have the NJHS.
Adviser Margaret Kelshaw will organize society programs.

After the candlelight induction ceremony Sarah Leib, a seventh grader,
said, “My brother is in the national honor society and he’s going to Lehigh
University. It helps you get into good schools.”

Ninth-grader Justin Nork agrees. “It will look good when you try to get
into college.”

To be accepted into the NJHS, students must have a cumulative 89.5
grade-point average and meet character, leadership, service, scholarship and
citizen standards. Participation in school and community service projects is
also a requirement.

Acceptance into the NJHS does not guarantee membership in the high school
National Honor Society. For the NHS, students must maintain similar academic
standards and apply in their senior year.

The goal of the NJHS is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a
desire to render service, promote leadership, develop character and encourage
citizenship.

Schools interested in NJHS should write: NJHS, 1904 Association Drive,
Reston, Va., 22091-1537.
