Pittston Area defeated Wyoming Area in the girls basketball Holiday Tournament held at Pittston Area, 53-49.
It was Pittston’s second win over Wyoming Area in the month of December, both by four points. Speedy freshman Kristen Baumes poured in 18 points and was named the tournament MVP.
Wyoming Area rallied from 15 down to lead twice in the fourth quarter. PA’s Julie Bidwell made a basket with 10 seconds remaining to eventually cool off the Warriors.
The Pittston Area boys captured the James Munley Invitational championship with a 79-64 win over Crestwood.
The Patriots were led by senior Vinny O’Hop, who scored a game-high 30 points. Tournament MVP Matt Munski dropped in another 26.
Wyoming Area, under the direction of rookie head coach Jim Zardecki, finished the preseason on a high note with a 50-36 victory over Lake-Lehman to take third place in the Munley Tournament.
The Warriors overcame a 14-8 first period deficit and ourscored the Knights in each of the remaining three quarters. Top scoring honors for the Warriors were shared by seniors Mark Blannard, Jim Maguire and Steve Tigue, who each scored 12 points.
Junior Wayne Luchetti also had 12 points for Wyoming Area.
The Wyoming Area girls basketball team, led by 31 rebounds from senior starter Sandy Amantea, took down Bishop O’Reilly, 44-43.
Junior guard Gemma Mehalchik, despite being sick with the flu, finished the game with 23 points. She was the only player who had double digits in points for the Warriors.
