Temple sophomore Brandon Matthews carded a one-under par 70 on the final day of the 2014 American Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championships Tuesday to finish the three-day event tied for fourth-place with a one-under 213.
The Owls also had their best day as a team at the tough Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Beach Resort and Golf Club, shooting a 13-over 297 to finish ninth of 10 teams.
Matthews, who was tied for sixth after the second day, turned in a second straight round of 70 to move into the top 5 in the strong field. In the first round, Matthews fired a 2-over 73.
The Pittston Area graduate will once again be competing to Sectional Qualifying at for the 2014 U.S. Open. His stellar performance last year earned him a free pass from this week’s local qualifying.
Matthews will tee it up on June 2 at Old Oaks Country Club and Century Country Club in Purchase, N.Y. Last year, Matthews settled for first alternate after rounds of 72 at Old Oaks Country Club and 67 at Century for a 2-under-par 139.
Southern Methodist University turned in an impressive one-over 285 to overtake the University of Central Florida and win the tournament by five strokes. Houston, ranked ninth in the nation, was three strokes behind UCF.
SMU’s Bryon Dechambeau carded a 68 for the second straight day to win the individual title with a seven-under 206.
