MOOSIC –With Misericordia starter Tim Burek tossing a one-hitter through four innings, Rowan coaches questioned whether the right-hander was standing on the pitching rubber the correct way.

Being just a sophomore, Burek could’ve got rattled by the gamesmanship about the new rule that states pitchers must be square to the rubber when he starts his motion.

“The umpires came to me and said ‘Timmy’s gotta start square,’” Cougars coach Pete Egbert said. “You’re a little concerned at that point because he’s given up one hit through four innings…as they start messing around with the pitcher a little bit.”

However, that lit a fire under Burek and he lasted four more innings allowing just four hits in leading the Cougars to a 1-0 win over the second-seeded Profs in the Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Saturday afternoon at PNC Field.

The No. 5 seed Cougars dispatched the top two seeds in the event, knocking out top-seeded Moravian earlier in the event.

“We’re a team that battles and we know we have the talent to beat any guys in this tournament,” Burek said. “We have a bigger heart than anyone in this tournament. Our cohesiveness is better than anyone else.”

With the win over Rowan, Misericordia advanced to another elimination game Saturday night against Wesleyan. At press time in the nightcap, the Cougars were in a big hole, trailing the Cardinals 6-0 in the eighth inning. The winner earns the right to play Susquehanna at noon today in another elimination game.

In addition to scattering the four hits, Burek walked just one and fanned six while implementing a new pitch into his repertoire, a cutter. He even fanned two batters using the new pitch.

Rowan didn’t get a runner past second base the entire game, and the only time the Profs got a runner on second were from doubles by Casey Grimes in the second and Nick Kreiger in the eighth.

In the second, Grimes’ two-base hit led off the inning, but Burek got the next three batters; Kromeiger’s double was with two outs.

The other trouble Burek got in was the seventh when he allowed a leadoff single, but he came back to get the next five outs of the game.

“The adrenaline was really pumping and I didn’t want to get taken out of the game,” Burek said.

Misericordia ace Ryan Dorosh, who allowed eight runs in six innings of the team’s opening-game of the event, pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season.

“He was good and we had no doubt that he would be good,” Egbert said about Dorosh. “He came to me before the game and said ‘I want the ball if I get the opportunity’ and it was 50-50 whether to keep Timmy out there and we felt the fourth time around in the order might give them a new look.”

The Cougars scored the only run of the game when they had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth with two outs. That’s when Jeremy DeCotiis was hit a pitch for a 1-0 lead. The hit batter with the bases loaded was the third time that’s happened for the Cougars in the tournament.

“It’s something we talk about that triggers our offense,” Egbert said about the hit batsmen. “If we ever get the bats moving it’ll be fun.”

The bats have been fairly silent over the last two games, and after scoring the run on Saturday afternoon, Misericordia was held hitless and managed just one walk the rest of the way as Rowan pitchers retired 13 of the final 14 batters. A two-out single in the fourth was the last hit the Cougars got of the game.
