Zelous Wheeler hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre rallied from a five-run deficit to defeat Louisville 6-5 Wednesday.
After a 56-minute rain delay, the RailRiders cut into Louisville’s 5-0 lead with two runs in the eighth. Russ Canzler delivered a two-run single to left, scoring Kyle Roller and Wheeler. Roller opened the inning with a single and Wheeler walked an out later. The RailRiders then loaded the bases with one out, but Dean Anna grounded into a force out and Ramon Flores struck out to end the rally.
SWB loaded the bases again in the ninth with no one out. Adonis Garcia opened the inning with a single to left and Roller was hit by a pitch. Scott Sizemore followed with a single to load the bases with no one out.
Wheeler then hit a grand slam to left for his fourth home run of the season. Canzler singled for his third hit of the game, but Louisville reliever Pedro Villarreal worked out of the jam.
SWB reliever Jim Miller pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the victory. Starter Brian Gordon allowed nine hits and three runs in six innings of work.
Kristopher Negron hit a two-run triple for Louisville in the fifth. He scored on Herman Iribarren’s single to give the Bats a 3-0 advantage.
Louisville increased its lead to 5-0 when Ruben Gotay doubled to knock in a run and scored when Felix Perez followed with an RBI single.
The RailRiders finish up their four-game series at Louisville at 6:35 p.m. today. They then head to Indianapolis for four games before returning home Tuesday against Norfolk.
