King’s men’s lacrosse team overcame a 3-2 halftime deficit with a strong second half defensive performance as the Monarchs defeated Hartwick College, 10-5 decision at McCarthy Stadium.

With the win King’s improved to 3-4 while Hartwick slipped to 0-4.

After a scoreless first period, Hartwick pushed across a par of goals in the second period to take the lead. King’s got on the board with 3:40 left in the first half when Ryan Boornazian scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to 2-1. After a Hartwick goal at 2:06, King’s trimmed the lead to 3-2 at the half when Cam Trick scored unassisted with 1:21 left on the clock.

The Hawks extended the lead to 4-3 on a goal 2:54 into the third period, but the Monarchs answered with unassisted scores from Brock Johnson and Trick to tie the score at 4-4 with 5:31 left in the third quarter. King’s then took its first lead of the game at the 3:53 mark when Johnson converted a pass from Mike DiCarlo into a 5-4 Monarch lead entering the final period.

After Hartwick scored 1:07 into the fourth quarter to tie the game at 5-5, it was all King’s the rest of the way.

A.j. Bungert started the assault when he scored off an assist from Ryan Boornazian with 9:04 left. DiCarlo then struck net following a pass from Evan Lawshe just 1:26 later. The score then grew to 8-5 when Bungert scored unassisted with 4:35 left

The Monarchs pushed the lead to 9-5 when Johnson found the back of the net off an assist by Boornazian at the 3:14 mark. DiCarlo added the final goal of the game when he made good on a pass by Lawshe with 2:19 to go to set the final score.

Hartwick outshot King’s 30-25 but were held to just four attempts in the fourth quarter with the game on the line.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Franklin and Marshall 4, Wilkes 3

After rallying to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh, visiting Wilkes University allowed the game-winning tally to cross the plate on a walk in the bottom of the 11th and host Franklin and Marshall escape with a 4-3 victory Tuesday t Caplan Field.

Wilkes slips to 3-6 overall following the road defeat while F&M improves its overall mark to 9-3 on the year after the Wilkes finished with six hits including two from Brown. Berg and Clymer (2) added RBI’s.

Matt Kaster suffered the loss on the hill pitching the final two innings of the game. Stephen Ruch started going four innings allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

Breakers capture silver

The Wilkes-Barre Rugby Club successfully opened their Spring campaign on Saturday by capturing the runner-up silver medal in the 16th Annual 4- Leaf Fifteens Rugby Tournament held in New York City. Preliminary matches saw the Breakers defeating Montauk, Rochester, Suffolk, and the NYPD rugby clubs. The semifinal draw had the Breakers win in a thrilling 12-7 overtime win over the New York Athletic Club before dropping the championship match to Boston’s North Shore RFC, 12-5. Breakers Steve Turner and Sean Sabelesky also garnered individual honors being named to the tournament select side.
