An early five-run lead quickly ballooned for Misericordia as the Cougars took down King’s 15-2 on Thursday.

Kyle Lindsay led the Cougars with two hits and five RBI. Mike Comeford had a team-high three hits and drove in a run while Connor Rittenhouse had two RBI.

Michael Turton threw seven shutout innings as Misericordia built a 12-0 lead after seven.

Joe Zito hit a two-run triple for the Monarchs.

Awards at Wilkes

Freshmen Matthew Grossman and Marissa Surdy won top honors in Wilkes athletics on Thursday, being named the school’s male and female Athlete of the Year, respectively.

Grossman won a national championship for the wrestling team, earning the 133-pound title. He was the 11th wrestling champ in program history and the first since 1975.

Surdy was the Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year in field hockey, earning a first-team all-conference bid with a team-high 40 points (13 goals, 14 assists).

Also honored were Sara Hagenbach (women’s golf) and Bobby Schappell (baseball) as the school’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

SOFTBALL

Lady Monarchs sweep

King’s won a pair of one-run games, beating Lycoming 5-4 and 3-2 at home.

Debra Renner (double) and Alizabeth Ellsworth both had two hits and an RBI in the opener with Robyn Klingerman getting the win relief.

Allie Herbert tossed a complete-game four-hitter in the nightcap.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

Hartwick 11, Misericordia 8

Brooke North scored four times in a road loss for the Cougars. Melina Juliano had two goals and two assists while Olivia Garcia and Liz Mulvey scored one goal each.

Misericordia hosts FDU-Florham at 1 p.m. Saturday with first place on the line.

The Cougars were swept on the road, snapping a two-match win streak.
