‘Beno’ Borzell Drive for Excellence golf tournament next Saturday

All area boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level 2013 Knights of Columbus soccer challenge sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Pittston Council No. 372. Winners progress through local, district and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C headquarters in New Haven, Conn., based on scores from the state-level competitions. Participants will compete in their respective age groups.


This year’s local event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 22 at the James Clark Park located along Curry Street in Junction Section of Pittston. Start time will be at noon and there is no cost to join in the fun.


All contestants will be recognized for their participation in this event. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent to compete. For additional information contact either Don Mac Rae at 815-4454 or Mitch Megliola at 335-3002.


WYOMING AREA


FOOTBALL PARENTS


The Wyoming Area Football Parents Association will meet on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at Sabatini’s Pizza in Exeter. All parents of players in grades 7 through 12 are welcome and encouraged to attend. They are also offering an opportunity to win tickets to a Penn State Football game. The grand prize is four PSU vs. Purdue football tickets for Nov. 16 (with chair backs) plus a parking pass for tailgating, and a $100 Gift Card. The consolation prize is two PSU vs. Nebraska tickets for Nov. 23 (with chair backs) plus a parking pass for tailgating and a $50 Gift Card. Tickets are available from all WAFPA board members as well as at the Spirit Stand at WA home football games.

GOLF TOURNAMENT


The John “Beno” Borzell Drive for Excellence golf tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Fout Seasons Golf Club in Exeter. The format is captain and crew with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Cost is $65 per golfer and includes 18 holes with a cart, breakfast and a barbecue with prizes after the tournament. Proceeds benefit the John Anthony “Beno” Borzell Scholarship and the Wilkes University Environmental Chemistry Lab and Scholarship. Make check payable to John Anthony “Beno” Borzell Scholarship. Hole and Tee sponsors are available for $100.

SOFTBALL TOURNEY


The first Duryea Fire Softball tournament, benefiting firefighter Jordan Thomas, will be held on Sept. 20, 21, 22 at the Dupont Little League Field. Thomas was recently diagnosed with Non-Hopkins Lymphoma and has started his battle against the illness. Entry fee is $150 per team. More information: Joe Korea at 499-2350 or Jeff Hughes at 499-1113. Monetary, basket and gift certificate donations would be greatly appreciated.

Pittston Area Wrestling Booster Club will meet Monday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Nomination of officers will take place. All parents are urged to attend. Plans for the upcoming season will be discussed.

The field hockey team would like to extend a special thank you to West Side Auto for their generosity and allowing the team to conduct their car wash and bake sale at their location. Thank you to all who participated in this event.


The WAFH Parents meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at the secondary center. The team will be sponsoring a breast cancer awareness game at 4:15 p.m. on Oct. 1. Profits from the bake sale and basket raffle will go to Susan G. Komen for the cure and the American Cancer Society through Play for the Cure. Please come out and show your support


CALLING ‘78


WARRIORS


On Nov. 1 the 35th anniversary of the 10-1 Wyoming Area Football Warriors will be celebrated in conjunction with Ring of Pride Weekend. Each year several former greats are inducted into our Ring of Pride. This year’s class is Ed Labatch, Dan Gercak, Roger Orlandini and Joe Bartell.


This celebration is for all 1978 team members (Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores and Coaches). In the previous three years we honored the 1970 team, the 1971 team and the 1992 team.
