KINGSTON TWP. — Paul M. Sabol, who led the township’s police force for two decades, died Thursday.

He was 89.

Sabol, who joined the department as a part-time officer in 1963, rose to the rank of chief in 1972 and served until his retirement in 1993.

Active in numerous community organizations, Sabol also was a past president of the Luzerne County Chiefs of Police Association and the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Assocation.

Sabol was a World War II veteran who served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. A Kingston native, he attended Luzerne High School.

He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Ferne Howell Sabol, who died in 2011.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday from the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home in Shavertown.
