Edward Malaney

    Edward J. Malaney, 77, of East Hawthorne Street, Hazleton, died Thursday at
homeBorn in Hazleton, he was son of the late Andrew and Ann (Carr) Malaney.
   
He graduated from West Hazleton High School in 1938 and McCann’s School of
Business.
   
He served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II as a technician
sergeant and also as a member of the 239th Separate Signal Corps Intelligence
Unit prior to his discharge in December 1945.
   
He participated in six amphibious landings including ones in Italy and
France, and was wounded twice during his enlistment.
   
During his service, he was awarded a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters, a
Bronze Star, a Combat Infantry Badge, a European and Mid-East Theater Medal, a
Victory Medal, and the Germany Occupation Medal.
   
He earned various awards and medals for his expert marksmanship and the
Croix de Guerre from the French government.
   
Prior to World War II, he was employed by the Duplan Silk Mill, Hazleton,
the Bethlehem Steel Shipyards, Baltimore, and the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
   
He retired from the federal government in 1982 after working for the
Interstate Commerce Commission and the Federal Maritime Commission, where he
worked through the United States Coast Guard supervising activities with
European, Middle Eastern, and Pacific-rim governments.
   
He was employed by the Laurel Laboratory and the Pennsylvania Driver’s
License Photo Center, both in Hazleton.
   
He was a member of St. Gabriel’s R.C. Church, Hazleton.
   
He was a member of the Boilermaker’s Union, Philadelphia, the AFL-CIO, the
Telegraphers Union, and the Brotherhood of Railroad Workers.
   
He was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew.
   
Surviving are his wife, the former Rose Hanlon; son Edward Jr., Hazleton;
sister Norine Busetti, Fairfield, Conn.; Nancy Geddes, Phillipsburg, N.J.; and
several nieces and nephews.
   
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday from the Boyle Funeral Home,
100 S. Wyoming St., Hazleton, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in
St. Gabriel’s Church.
   
Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
   
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
