Lakeland School District received a certificate of achievement from the Keystone Teachers Association of Pennsylvania for ranking 98 of 501 school districts statewide in students’ performance in the 2009 PSSA science exam, superintendent Margaret Billings-Jones, Ed. D announced to school board members at the Nov. 18 meeting.
In other business, long-time board members Al Mushel and Tony Carito thanked their fellow board members for their professionalism in working with them during their time on the school board.
“I would like to personally thank the people who supported me and I gladly welcome the new school board members at the next meeting,” Carito said.
In other action, the board accepted the resignation of Sue Bugno, secondary assistant principal, and thanked her for her one year of service.
The board also accepted the resignation of school and community relations director Rick Barone and appointed Gretchen Allen to serve in that position until the end of the school year.
The board also approved Lakeland School District’s portion of the 2008-2013 collective bargaining agreement for the Career Technology Center of Lackawanna County.
The board also voted to approve the formation of an after school art club and a hiking club for grades seven through 12. They also approved purchasing 24 championship jackets for the girls varsity soccer team for an undefeated season and winning the Division 1 Northern Division Title.
Although the district is still waiting to receive the vaccine, the board approved the distribution of the H1N1 vaccination as per the Public Readiness and Preparedness Act for the H1N1 vaccination.
