WILKES-BARRE — A man hired to keep the parking lot clean at South Main Plaza was shot in the leg after he reportedly told people to leave the property.

Jason Girton, who only knows the victim by his first name, Fletcher, said he spoke to the victim after he was shot.

Girton, of Mountain Top, said Fletcher was shot in the lower leg and was taken away by ambulance.

Girton said Fletcher told him the shooter and the others got in a red Pontiac with black rims and fled.

Others in the group of men with the shooter got into a Jeep and fled.

“He cleans up around here,” Girton said of Fletcher. “I guess they were doing something they shouldn’t have been and he told them to get off the property.”

Charlotte Maro, who works at a nearby convenience store, said she heard a single gunshot and saw about 10 people scatter and drive away.

She described Fletcher, who hours earlier had fixed the store air conditioner, as “the nicest guy in the world. “
