There is just something about the smell of freshly baked cookies. During our recent cookie walk, that sweet, comforting aroma of baked goods filled the air at the theater. We were overjoyed by the abundance of baked goods we received. Donations of cookies came in from local businesses, schools, restaurants, organizations and so many amazing folks who helped make the Dietrich’s annual cookie walk a success. We are also grateful for our volunteers who organized and worked at the cookie walk and for everyone who bought a delicious container of cookies to help support cultural programming at the Dietrich. Thank you.

We would also like to extend our appreciation to Ace-Robbins for sponsoring our major holiday events at the Dietrich this year including free showings of “Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas,” our Holiday Workshop and our free showings of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” What a wonderful gift to the community.

Another free event that will be taking place at the Dietrich during the holidays is An Evening With Flynn & Co. Join us for this live concert Monday, Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. as singer/songwriter Sean Flynn performs with an intense, soul-baring flair. Sean is a Tunkhannock native that currently resides in Boulder, Colo., and is excited to have the opportunity to sing and play in his hometown. Besides playing solo, he will be performing duets with a couple of friends who are local musicians right here in Tunkhannock. Seating will be first come, first served. We hope to see you there.

I would also like to remind you that a gift certificate to our upcoming Holiday Camp would be a great present for any young, budding artist on your list. During this camp students will work with a variety of mediums as they explore drawing, painting, pottery and sculpture. Camp will be held over the holiday break, Friday, Dec. 27 and Monday, Dec. 30 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Admission is $25 and all materials are provided. For more information or to register, please call the Dietrich at (570) 996-1500.

Looking to the new year, we will be continuing our Dietrich Classic Movie Series in 2014. We had great crowds for this month’s classic movie pick “White Christmas.” I just love to see these great films on the big screen. Our selection for January is the 1956 western “The Searchers” directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne. It will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 1 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 each. Come celebrate cinema’s rich history with us on the second Wednesday of each month. We hope to see you there.

As you can see, the Dietrich is so much more than the movies!
