WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, R-Hazleton, issued a statement regarding the new study on the costs of illegal immigration from the Heritage Foundation:
“We have known for some time that there are dramatic costs associated with illegal immigration and proposed amnesty for untold millions of illegal immigrants already in the country, or who will be prompted to come to this country once we advertise amnesty.
“Now, the costs are estimated to be at least $6.3 trillion over the life spans of people who are legalized under current amnesty proposals, even after tax revenues are realized. At a time when our national debt approaches $17 trillion, to add nearly a third of that total on top of it is reckless and irresponsible to future generations – most notably legal immigrants who have followed the rule of law and would soon have to compete for scarce jobs and resources with tens of millions of new residents.
“We know that our immigration system has massive holes in it. Our recent experience in Boston proves that there are problems with our visa system. To continue to talk about amnesty when all of these flaws are staring us in the face is extraordinarily short-sighted.
“A proposal of amnesty does nothing to make our country safer. It does nothing to make it easier for legal residents to find a job. And it is fiscally irresponsible. So, exactly why would we do this?”
