The Plains Sports Hall of Fame will induct four new members during a dinner and ceremony at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Plains Ambulance Association Building on Maffett Street. The inductees include Joseph Bonick, Joseph Karaffa, Jason Tribbet and Jennifer Jones-Yuhas.
Bonick, who has been studying the martial arts for 35 years, has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and was elected into the Hall of Fame of Kickboxing of the Martial Arts in 1998. Bonick compiled professional record of 12-1-3 with eight knockouts and four technical knockouts. He retired in 2000 after winning the World Kickboxing Championship at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Karaffa, a 1965 graduate of Plains High School, was a standout baseball player. He was an outfielder/pitcher and on the Plains Little League team that played for a state shampionship in Williamsport. In 1965, he was selected as the MVP of the Wyoming Valley Baseball League.
Tribbet was an outstanding baseball player at Pittston Area and Plains American Legion. From 1994-96, he was selected to the Legion regional all-star team and was a recipient of the Frank Meehan Scholarship. In 1996, he posted a combined high school/Legion record of 13-2.
Tribbet played at East Stroudsburg and, as a freshman, had an earned-run average of 1.87 which ranked him 15th in the nation. He holds the record for single-season winning percentage with a 6-0 record. He was a four-year letterwinner at ESU.
Jones-Yuhas is a 2000 graduate of Coughlin, where she was a three-year starter on the volleyball team. Jones-Yuhas was an honorable mention all-conference volleyball player in her senior year.
At College Misericordia, Jones-Yuhas was a four-year starter in volleyball and was team captain as a junior and senior. Her single-season records include first in single season games played (113), fourth in assists and 10th in aces. Career records include first in games played (392), fourth in assists (928), fourth in aces (150), and sixth in digs (938). She is the women’s volleyball coach at Misericordia.
Tickets for the dinner/ceremony are $25 and are available from any Hall of Fame board member.
