HARRISBURG — Two practices, one message.
Play defense, coach Dale Rapson preached to the Pocono junior female
basketball team. The squad has, and has a gold medal within its reach.

Pocono defeated Great Lake, 64-38, on the second day of Keystone State
Games basketball play, and is one win away from the gold medal game.

Pocono (2-0) plays winless Delaware Valley at noon today. A win assures
Pocono a berth in the gold medal game. Even with a loss, Pocono has a chance
to reach the medal round at 5:30 p.m. (bronze medal game) and 7:15 p.m. (gold
medal game).

In two games, Pocono has allowed opponents just 44, then 38 points. That
has Rapson, who is from Wilkes-Barre and is the operations manager at Pocono
Downs, smiling.

“We play good defense,” said Rapson, who raced off to attend to his duties
at the harness track after the game. “You only get two practices and that’s
what I stressed each time.”

Of course, this group can score, too. Sarah Pipech of Wapwallopen scored a
game-high 12 points, Steph Rothery of Berwick had six, Alicia Rapson of
Wilkes-Barre (Dale’s daughter) added five and Janette Pieczynski of Kingston
chipped in four.

The most impressive part of the offense was that everybody from Pipech and
Pieczynski, 5-foot-5 guards, to Rothery, a 5-11 center, was able to run the
fast break.

“All our girls are very agile,” Rapson said. “They all can handle the ball.
All of them can play several different positions and that really helps.”
