A few vacation days as Mr. Mom makes husband long for the office

My husband decided to take the last of his vacation time from work while
the kids were off from school for the holidaysTo an extent, we switched roles
for at least a few of these days when I came in to work at The Times Leader
while he stayed home to do Mr. Mom stuff … the laundry, grocery shopping,
vacuuming, pretending to cook, refereeing.
I think it was that last one that finally did him in.

At first I thought he was doing one of his comical imitations of me when I
say that I’ve had enough of these kids, this fighting, etc.

But then I realized he was more than serious. The teenager and the
second-grader were no longer allowed to speak to one another for the rest of
the night, he said. (This was 2:30 in the afternoon).

Of course, that didn’t last long. He gets over these things much faster
than I do. I’m not sure whether he’ll ever take another vacation while the
kids are home from school this long.

But I’ll bet that he can’t wait to go back to work. Even if he won’t say it
out loud.

Today is the deadline to order homemade pies from Christ’s Memorial United
Church of Christ in West Hazleton. The choices include apple, pumpkin and
raisin, and the cost is $5 per pie. To place an order, call 455-2460 or

Pies must be picked up between 3 and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11 at the

West Hazleton.

There is still time to reserve a spot for the New Year’s Eve party
(according to the Julian calendar) on Sunday, Jan. 12 at Stefanisko’s on Route
309 in Hazleton. The Golden Tones Orchestra will entertain from 4-8 p.m. Also
included are a buffet, cash bar, and novelties.

This event is sponsored by the Anthracite Polka Association, a non-profit
organization which holds monthly dances at Stefanisko’s.

Call 455-1737 to make reservations for “New Year’s Eve,” or to request a
calendar of events for 1997.

The “Joseph David Marsilio Memorial Fund” has been established at the
Hazleton Animal Shelter to benefit the spay/neuter program. Contributions can
be sent to the shelter at: PO Box 481, Hazleton, PA 18201. Your support will
help to slow the overpopulation of homeless animals in this community.

The Hazleton Camera Club will meet at 7 Monday night at Hazleton General
Hospital’s Office and Education Building.

The following officers will be installed for 1997: Matt Gallagher,
president; Mike Garra, vice president; Stacy Crouse, secretary; and Lori
Floyd, treasurer.

National Bank at a future date.

Anyone interested in photography is welcome.

January is Back Health Month at Hazleton General Hospital. Free literature
on this subject will be available in the main lobby for the entire month.

Also, take note that the HGH Women’s Task Force will offer free blood
pressure screenings from 8-10 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month in
the hospital’s main lobby.

If you would like to receive a brochure of the Task Force’s programs and
seminars coming up in 1997, call 450-4945. In future months you can learn
everything from cardiopulmonary resuscitation to cooking with herbs to stress
management and babysitting basics. Watch this column for dates and times.

Today you can venture out to the Comfort Inn on Route 93 for a glimpse into
your future! The area’s first “Psychic Fair” will be held in the Breaker Room
from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and feature palm, card, and rune-stone readers.

Vendors will display crystal jewelry, as well as New Age books and other
merchandise.

You don’t need to travel to the Poconos any longer to have “a little
psychic fun” (as Dionne Warwick would say)!

That’s all the fun I can offer this week. You can get those Valentine plans
in the mail to: , or call me at .

And if you’re planning a role-reversal this January, just be sure you know
what you’re getting yourself into.
