PLYMOUTH TWP.- Supervisors unanimously voted down a proposal from the West
Side Landfill Authority for the township to contribute $4,005 a year to aid in
the monitoring of the former landfill’s wells.

“We will in no way, shape, or form pay for those costs,” said Supervisor
Chairman John Rinehimer.
The proposal, drafted by the authority, called for the township to continue
paying $4,005 a year for the next 30 years. The township is among 12 other
former authority members being asked to pay their share of the $48,000 needed
each year.

The monitoring is to be in accordance with Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Protection guidelines and is required to close the landfill.

The wells that are to be monitored were drilled when the landfill was
opened and are to be monitored for methane and heavy metal content in the
water table.

An Oct. 22 letter from the authority said if results show that less
frequent monitoring is needed after a period of testing the cost could be
reduced.

In other business:

Part-time police officer Jamie Sgarlat was promoted to full-time because of
another officer’s resignation. Sgarlat’s position will be paid in part by last
year’s Community Orientated Policing Services grant.
