Berwick, Curry undercut kids’ sincere desire and respect for education

In regard to the controversial decision by the PIAA to allow the Berwick
Bulldogs to continue their season, what messages are we sending to our
youth today?

Every radio and TV station in the area made it their top news story. Is

Berwick’s star linebacker eligible to play?

Here is a kid who is 19 years old and has been in and out of high school
over the past six years. He missed countless days of school, leaving us to
conclude that his primary goal in life is not his education. After taking a
GED test in 1996, which apparently he must have failed, he enrolls in a high
school nationally known for its football program, and now has been offered a
full scholarship to Penn State.

I believe that everyone deserves a second chance, but how could this kid
possibly achieve all this after having attended four different schools in the
last six years?

What about the students who make their education a priority- who sweat and
give their all in the classroom rather than on the football field?

It’s lucky for Gus Felder that he chose Berwick and George Curry as his
ticket to Penn State. Most of the school districts in this area would have
closed the door in his face.
