THEFT RING

DALLAS TWP. — Police are close to breaking up a burglary ring that has
ripped off the Wyoming Valley for three months.

In the past week, local police and FBI agents raided two homes in the
Valley, seizing merchandise stolen in about 10 burglaries this year. A source
says arrests are imminent.
In addition, FBI agents are investigating the same suspects in connection
to federal crimes in the area, the source said.

Although the raids happened within sight of neighbors, police have sought
to keep a lid on information. On Monday, local and federal law enforcement
officials said little about the three-month probe.

An FBI official refused comment. It is the FBI’s policy to neither confirm
nor deny a possible investigation unless an arrest is made.

Dallas Township Police Chief Carl Miers said only, “We have an ongoing
investigation.” He declined to identify the nature of the investigation or
confirm the local department’s cooperation with the FBI.

Since spring, Dallas Township police have responded to four burglaries and
an attempted burglary.

The burglars struck each time within the same two-mile area of the
19-square-mile township.

The police investigation includes the following burglaries and attempted
burglaries in the township:

April 15 at 6:51 a.m. police arrived at a pool hall on Main Road. Someone
had entered the business and stole $400 in quarters from poker machines, pool
tables and games.

April 15, someone entered a Lake Street home during the night and stole
$200 cash from a glass jug where change was stored. The home showed no sign of
forced entry. The victims said every door was locked.

April 28, A burglar escaped with $6,377 in cash and jewelry from an Orchard
View Terrace home. The burglary was reported at 9:56 a.m. No one was home when
the burglars were there; a window screen was cut to gain entrance.

April 28 at 2:46 a.m., a burglar fled from an Orchard View Terrace home
with $30,192 worth of jewelry, including a white gold and 17-karat diamond
heart and a diamond pendant. The burglar had unlocked a sliding glass door and
slipped in as residents slept.

April 30 residents of a Fern Brook home called police at 11:04 p.m. when
two men tried to break open their back door. Police arrived by 11:08 p.m., but
the men were gone.
