TOUCHDOWN SUMMARY

WHITE — Akeel Lynch 1-yard run (Sam Ficken kick). Steven Bench takes the helm for the first drive of the scrimmage and looks calm and comfortable despite some swirling snow. Allen Robinson turns a designed reverse into an improvised double-reverse that gains 29 yards. Bench completes two passes, a dump-off to Zach Zwinak and a nice dart over the middle to Matt Zanellato for 18 yards inside the 5. Lynch, the dynamic freshman nicknamed “Big Maple” by Bill O’Brien because of his Canadian heritage, gets two cracks at the goal line to get the touchdown.

WHITE — Jesse James 27-yard pass from Tyler Ferguson (Ficken kick). Ferguson’s start doesn’t go quite as smoothly, but the California transplant spies his mammoth tight end streaking open down the left side. James has a step on his man, but the throw is a bit too far and James has to leap for the catch. Did he come down in bounds? “The replay will tell the tale,” James said after the game. Let’s just say it’s probably fortunate for him that O’Brien wasn’t about to challenge a play that was ruled a Penn State touchdown.

WHITE — Brent Wilkerson 6-yard pass from Steven Bench (Ficken kick). After his first drive that produced a score, Bench gave way to Ferguson and walk-ons Austin Whipple D.J. Crook for much of the first half. He got a chance to throw his first score of the scrimmage in the third quarter, first looking for Eugene Lewis in the middle of the end zone. The two couldn’t connect through some heavy traffic, but Bench would fare better on the next play. Wilkerson, a promising redshirt freshman tight end looking to make a name for himself at a stacked position, found a hole in the defense and Bench delivered the ball on the money for the score.

WHITE — Richy Anderson 5-yard pass from Ferguson (kick failed). Arguably Ferguson’s best play of the afternoon, the sophomore found himself under pressure on a fourth-down play inside the 10. Ferguson, who can move faster than you might expect, just barely eluded a pass rusher in a game where even a hand on the QB’s jersey can be ruled a sack. Roiling to his right, he found the true freshman Anderson with an accurate throw that gave the legacy recruit just enough room to haul in before teaching the right boundary of the end zone. Nice-looking throw.
