Students in the sixth-grade Earth Science class at Wyoming Area Catholic School, Exeter, were challenged to design a seismograph, using a 3-step design process: Research, Design and Build, Evaluate and Redesign.
The students were challenged to design an experiment, evaluate their results and troubleshoot problems that occur during the design and build stages. Their finished design (seismograph) had to:
1. Record vibrations continuously for 30 seconds
2. Produce a seismograph that can distinguish between gentle and strong earthquakes
3. Record seismic readings consistently from trial to trial
Mary Ann Paddock-Kaminski is the science teacher for grades 6 through 8 at Wyoming Area Catholic School.
