The Relay for Life of Greater Pittston received national recognition at the East-Central Division Summit in November for its efforts from the 2012-2013 Relay season.

For last year’s event, 33 teams and more than 500 participants raised $45,738 in the fight against cancer. The planning committee was made up entirely of Pittston Area High School students and moderator Amanda Bauman, a chemistry teacher at Pittston Area, and American Cancer Society staff partner Loriann Fontanella.

For their efforts, the group was awarded the All-American Award from the American Cancer Society Organization. This award recognizes growth, retention, relay branding, diversity and leadership in incorporating the 5 Ds within Relay events and throughout the year: fundraising development, event development, leadership development, team development and survivorship development.

The event was also recognized at the local level. It received the ACS High School Relay For Life Award awarded to the youth event with the highest income overall among all youth events in the region which includes Greater Pittston, Abington and Delaware Valley.

This year’s Relay for Life will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17 starting at the Pittston Area High School Stadium in Yatesville. So far, 31 teams and 400 participants have raised almost $10,500 on the way to their goal of $49,500.
