Kimberly Ference, assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Wilkes University, was recently named the 2013 Pharmacist of the Year by the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association (PPA). Ference, of Dallas, Pa., was honored with the award during the PPA’s 2013 Annual Conference in Gettysburg, Pa., on September 28, 2013.

The Pharmacist of the Year award is presented to the pharmacist who has demonstrated dedication to the profession, contributed time and effort to the various professional organizations, furthered the profession of pharmacy through community service, and embodied those qualities which exemplify the profession.

This is the second consecutive year a faculty member from Wilkes University has been honored with this award. Last year, Adam Welch, associate professor of pharmacy at Wilkes, was named Pharmacist of the Year.

Ference currently serves as the faculty advisor to the student chapter of the Pennsylvania Pharmacy Association at Wilkes University. In addition to her chapter advocacy initiatives, community outreach projects, and fundraisers, she takes a personal interest in the education and success of each of her students. In presenting Ference with the award, the PPA noted she also promotes the profession at career fairs, precepts students at health fairs and participates in charity walks to promote public awareness of public health issues.

Serving as a role model for her students, Ference is the current chair of the PPA Education Committee and a member of the organization’s conference committee. She also works with the Volunteers in Medicine Medical and Dental Clinic, which provides care to the working uninsured to expand the services provided to underserved populations.
