The fourth-grade students in Mrs. O’Hop’s class at the Pittston Area Intermediate Center recently extended their learning beyond the classroom walls and into the outdoors.

After studying the composition of soil, the different kinds of soil and the important role soil plays in our environment, the students were ready to “dig right in.”They collected a variety of natural materials and created their own recipes for homemade soil.

Once the final product was finished, the students then planted bean seeds in their creations and bean seeds in store-bought soil. After making predictions, students will be responsible over the next few weeks to compare the growth of the homemade soil against the store-bought soil.
