Diamonds and Coal

DIAMONDS
… to Luzerne County Engineer Jim Brozena for prevailing over the Army
Corps of Engineers in preserving some of the trees along the Susquehanna and
giving aesthetics more than a passing nod in the levee-raising project.
Brozena knows that the higher, stronger levees are going to be part of our
landscape for generations to come. He is to be congratulated for considering
the scenic and economic potential of the dikes- a place for running and
strolling, schmoozing and dining. And he’s not taking any riprap about it.

COAL

… to Dallas High School Principal Frank Galicki and football coach Ted
Jackson for their “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on disciplining athletes
arrested for underage drinking. A Dallas football player was reportedly
arrested at a beer party on July 30 also attended by a number of Wyoming
Valley West athletes. The Dallas administrator and teacher refuse to look into
the matter, arguing that police and the district justice haven’t officially
notified the school. Seven Wyoming Valley West students have been suspended as
a result of the episode.
