MOOSIC — Here’s how bad things got on the mound for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

The center fielder Taylor Dugas was pitching by the end of the seventh inning.

A depleted RailRiders pitching staff struggled to hold down Charlotte all Sunday night, finally imploding altogether during a seven-run sixth inning that propelled the Knights to a 13-9 victory over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at PNC Field.

Not even five home runs could save the RailRiders, or overcome their perilous pitching woes.

Actually, the outfielder wound up with the most credible pitching performance for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Summoned out of the dugout and onto the rubber with two outs in the seventh inning, Dugas put two men on base before recording the final out on a fly ball in the seventh. He surrendered a bad-hop single in the eighth inning, but induced a double play grounder to end the frame and finished with 1 1/3 scoreless innings for a 0.00 ERA.

Then in the ninth, Dugas switched positions with center fielder Antoan Richardson — who worked a scoreless frame thanks in part to a couple fine running catches by Dugas.

Maybe the RailRiders found a couple new men for their mound.

Heaven knows, they could use some.

Dugas became the emergency man when RailRiders reliever Jose Ramirez struck out the first two batters he faced in the top of the seventh inning, then departed with an apparent upper right side injury under his pitching arm while throwing ball two to Charlotte’s Matt Davidson.

The rest of the RailRiders pitching was just as painful.

Starter Jeremy Bleich, just off the disabled list, surrendered three runs in two innings and was removed after allowing the first two hitters he faced to reach base in the third inning.

He was replaced by Jairo Heredia — just called up from Double-A Trenton. And while he wasn’t terrible, Heredia wasn’t spectacular, either. He was charged with four runs in 3 2/3 innings, although Heredia finished with four strikeouts.

And the roof fell in on Danny Burawa, who came off a spectacular six-strikeout night during his two innings against Buffalo on Friday with an equally unspectacular performance Sunday.

Burawa was greeted with four straight singles when he entered the game in the sixth inning, contributing greatly to Charlotte’s seven-run rally that cracked open a back-and-forth game. Two outfield errors in the inning didn’t help. but RBI singles by Josh Phegley, Andy Wilkins, Matt Tuiasosopo and Tyler Saladino and a run-scoring double by Carlos Sanchez - all against Burawa — hurt worse.

Before that big inning, the RailRiders went toe-to-toe in a slugfest with Charlotte. They used home runs by Rob Refsnyder, Adonis Garcia and Kyle Roller to take a 7-6 lead after five innings. Yangervis Solarte extended his hitting streak to five consecutive at-bats since joining the RailRiders from the parent New York Yankees on Saturday before he flied to right field in the fourth inning. But Solarte finished with his second three-hit game for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while driving home one run and scoring another.

And back-to-back home runs by Corban Joseph and Romine - who also added two doubles on the night - pulled the RailRiders within 13-9 in the seventh inning.

If only their center fielders were standing in the center of the mound sooner.
