John Weiss, Marion Reese, and Sarah Borowski captured singles titles in the 2013 Scranton Tennis Club Championships held Aug. 17 and 18. Weiss, the defending champion, successfully combated the net-rushing tactics of Josh Arp, winning 6-0, 6-1. Top-seeded Reese used her experience and ball placement to defeat Abington Heights Cierra Beck 6-4, 6-2 in the Women’s A Singles final. Borowski won a competitive Women’s B Singles final match with Sophia Rinaldi by taking the third-set tiebreaker and the match 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).
To reach the final Weiss ousted Paul DeLuca 6-0, 6-2, while Arp upset second-seeded Butch Klepadlo 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the other semifinal. In the Women’s A Singles semifinal Reese defeated her doubles partner, Kathleen McKenna, 6-0, 6-1, while Beck gritted out a 7-6, 6-4 victory over former Valley View High School player Amber Jadus. Borowski edged Carolyn Hickman in a Women’s B Singles semifinal, winning 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6), while Rinaldi nipped Holly Sawardecker 6-2, 7-6 (3).
In the Women’s A Doubles final Angie Kluss and Diane Bailey survived a challenge from Marion Reese and Kathleen McKenna, taking the match 7-5, 6-1. In semifinal action Kluss and Bailey defeated Cierra Beck and Amber Jadus 6-0, 6-7, 1-0 (10-7), while Reese and McKenna eliminated Nastashia DeNunzio and Suzanne Spinelli 6-2, 6-1.
Karen Filipski and Nidia Marchese captured the Women’s B Doubles title by defeating Scranton Prep teammates Sophia Rinaldi and Marala Mackarey 6-1, 6-1. Filipski and Marchese survived their toughest match in the semifinals, when they just got past Sarah Borowski and Gabby Durr 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5). Rinaldi and Mackarey had an easier time with Caroline Mattise and Devinne Scott, winning 6-1, 6-3.
In the Men’s A Doubles Weiss repeated as champion, pairing up with Butch Klepadlo for a 6-4, 6-3 win over Paul Pugliese and Mike Strong. Earlier in the day Weiss and Klepadlo eliminated Joe and Mike McNulty 6-2, 6-1, while Pugliese and Strong glided past Joe Bailey and Terry Sweeney 6-2, 6-2 in the other semifinal.
