John Dante, a health insurance actuary, was recently honored as the Mark Skopek Toastmaster of the Year for 2008 by The Blue Diamonds Toastmasters, a local chapter of Toastmasters International to advance public speaking and leadership skills. The annual award was created in memory of Skopek, a founding member and former president who died of lymphoma in 2007. Dante, who serves as the club’s vice president of education, was nominated for the award for his leadership and efforts to increase membership. He also achieved the Toastmaster’s designations of Competent Communicator and Competent Leader for completing his first 10 speeches and satisfying leadership requirements, which earned the Blue Diamonds the Select Distinguished Club award from Toastmasters, the second highest award. The club is sponsored by Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania and meets there at 5 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday each month. To join, contact Lori Harpersberger at 200-4462.

United Way of Wyoming Valley will hold its annual awards program and annual meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, Plains Township. The reception will honor corporations and individuals for their support throughout the year, especially during the annual community campaign. More than 30 companies will be recognized with achievement awards and four major awards will also be presented. Sordoni Construction Services, Inc. will be recognized with the Corporate Award; the Rose Brader Community Service Award, the highest award for adult volunteerism, will be awarded to Elizabeth Griesmer of Shavertown; the Labor Award, established in 1976 to recognize valuable contributions made by union members, will be presented to Yolanda Riggsbee, (A.F.G.E. Local 1699); and the Sarah and Anthony F. Kane Outstanding Achievement Award will be presented to the Dallas Education Association, PSEA.

Attorney Robert Schaub will be presented the Distinguished Alumni Award during the 28th Annual Leadership Wilkes-Barre Dinner and Graduation scheduled June 4 at Genetti Hotel & Convention Center in Wilkes-Barre. Schaub, a member of the Leadership Wilkes-Barre Class of 1994, earned the awarded for his commitment to the community and support of Leadership Wilkes-Barre. Schaub is a partner at the law firm of Rosenn Jenkins & Greenwald, LLP. He and his wife Julie live in Dallas and have four children, Rachel, Hillary, Drew and Grace. The event, which is open to the public and chaired by Marilyn Millington, begins with cocktails at 5:30 p.m. followed by a dinner and a presentation of the Class of 2009.
