MOOSIC — Zach Nuding has made a habit of making his best starts this season at PNC Field.

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound right-hander entered Thursday night’s game with a 3-1 record and a 2.76 ERA in six starts.

As any baseball player will tell you though, you can’t be great all the time.

Thursday night was the time that Nuding’s numbers at the Moosic stadium took a hit.

The 24-year-old had his worst start of the season at PNC Field allowing six runs and 10 hits in five innings against Louisville as the Bats won the four-game series with an 8-5 win. Nuding’s previous high for runs allowed during a game in Moosic came against Norfolk on June 3 when he gave up four runs in six innings.

Despite the RailRiders taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by Jose Pirela to get Nuding a lead, the Bats pulled ahead in the next inning.

Thomas Neal (2 for 5), who spent most of last season with the RailRiders being an International League All-Star before being claimed on waivers by the Cubs, haunted his old team on Thursday night clubbing a three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning highlighting a five-run frame giving the Bats a 5-1 lead. The Bats had a batting average of 1.000 in the inning as two outs were recorded on sacrifice flies and another out was recorded when Felix Perez tried to extend a single into a double and was nailed at second.

It was the whole Louisville team that was hitting in the game, not just Neal. And it didn’t matter who the RailRiders had on the mound. The Bats piled up 14 hits, went 4 for 11 with runners in scoring position, and picked up four sacrifice flies. The Bats offense was so dominant that it did not go down 1-2-3 all game. The closest RailRiders pitchers came to having a perfect inning occurred five times when the Bats sent four batters to the plate in five different innings.

Louisville opened an 8-2 lead in the top of the seventh with the big hit, a run-scoring double by Bryan Anderson, who finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

The RailRiders started to chip away getting two in the bottom of the seventh. They loaded the bases against Chad Rogers, who struggled to find the plate. He threw 18 pitches and just five of them were strikes as he allowed two walks, hit a batter and gave up an RBI-single to Zoilo Almonte. Tim Crabbe came in for Rogers and got Zelous Wheeler — who was named in Minor League Baseball’s Moniker Madness for the best name in the minors earlier in the day — to ground into a doubleplay, which scored a run and trimmed Louisville’s lead to 8-4. Crabbe then got Francisco Arcia out on another groundball to end the inning.

SWB got the tying run on deck again in the bottom of the ninth. After Pirela started the inning with a double and scored on a single by Taylor Dugas to trim the lead to 8-5, Almonte struck out and Kyle Roller bounced into a doubleplay to end the game.
