BUFFALO, N.Y. — The RailRiders need a miracle to qualify for the playoffs now.

After Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s 11-7 loss to Buffalo on Friday night at Coca-Cola Field, the team’s elimination number in the International League North Division dropped to one, while the number dropped to two in the race for the league’s Wild Card spot.

The game started off right for the RailRiders as Jose Pirela’s 10th home run of the season gave them a 1-0 lead when he opened the game with the solo shot — his second leadoff home run this season.

Buffalo, which entered three games behind International League Wild Card leader Pawtucket, took the lead in the bottom of the third, getting five runs off RailRiders starter Matt Tracy on three RBI doubles, coming from George Kottaras, Cole Gillespie and Matt Hague. Anthony Gose added a run-scoring triple.

The RailRiders pulled within one at 5-4 in the top of the fourth as John Ryan Murphy’s fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot, highlighted the scoring. They tied the score at 6-6 in the seventh as Pirela — who finished a single shy of the cycle — tripled. It was the second time this week Pirela finished one hit away from the cycle.

But this was a night for the Bisons and their 16,252 fans in attendance.

Buffalo didn’t waste any time retaking the lead in the next half inning, and putting the game out of reach scoring five runs to open an 11-6 lead. Kottaras started the frame with a solo homer off Jim Miller. Gillespie added another run-scoring double, while Hague scored two on his second two-bagger of the night.

Ryan Goins also doubled in a run in the stanza for the Bisons, who piled up seven extra-base hits on the night.
