MOOSIC – Star Wars characters and paraphernalia was seen all over PNC Field Saturday night as the RailRiders celebrated the movie series.

Unfortunately for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the force was not with the team in as it lost to Durham 11-6. Many of those who dressed up on Saturday night looked good. The RailRiders looked good early and late. In between wasn’t so hot. The RailRiders made two errors, allowed eight walks, 10 hits, two hit batsmen and uncorked three wild pitches as they lost their seventh game in a row and 12 out of the last 13 in a contest that lasted 3 hours, 18 minutes.

One of the stats the RailRiders had been strong in all season, boasting a winning record when scoring first, proved to not be any help as they entered with a 17-11 record in that stat.

That’s right, for the first time in the series with the Bulls the RailRiders took the first lead of the game getting a run in the bottom of the first. After Thomas Neal laced a one-out single and Zoilo Almonte walked, Ronnier Mustelier punched a single to right to score Neal for a 1-0 lead.

The bases were loaded in the bottom of the second for the RailRiders with one out as they threatened to extend the lead. But Bulls pitcher J.D. Martin rang up Corban Joseph and Neal to end the inning.

That could have been beneficial because the Bulls answered in the next half inning getting to RailRiders starter Caleb Cotham by batting around and scoring five runs on just three hits. The Bulls were aided by a pair of SWB errors and RBI-singles from Vince Belnome and Shelley Duncan as they took a 5-1 lead.

After the RailRiders trimmed the lead to two at 5-3 in the bottom of the third thanks to a home run by Mustelier and a run-scoring double by Melky Mesa, Durham was back at it again in the top of the fourth plating three more runs and chasing Cotham (0-3). Jason Bourgeois singled to score a run and Belnome doubled him in to highlight the scoring that put Durham ahead 8-3.

Things didn’t get any prettier for the RailRiders when Dellin Betances took over for Cotham in the top of the fourth. Betances, who last appeared in a game on May 14 before getting called up to New York and not seeing action there, allowed an inherited runner to score in the fourth. He then allowed three runs of his own in 2 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two and accounted for one of the team’s wild pitches as Durham opened an 11-3 lead entering the bottom of the sixth.

Joseph hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season for SWB in the bottom of the sixth, a two-run shot to left pulling SWB within six at 11-5.

SWB relievers Jim Miller (two innings) and Cody Eppley (a perfect ninth) combined to go the last three frames not allowing any runs, while the offense added a run in the eighth, but for the third straight game a late rally wasn’t going to be enough for the team to overcome a large deficit just getting one in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Zoilo Almonte.
