The RailRiders made things interesting, filling the bases and sending the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning. But a sterling pitching performance by Buffalo starter Justin Germano and a five-run deficit proved too much for the RailRiders to overcome in a 6-2 loss.

RailRiders at the plate: Melky Mesa was on base three times, with two hits including a double and when he was plunked by a pitch, and scored the team’s first run. Adonis Garcia had a pair of hits, including a double in the ninth inning. J.R. Murphy had an RBI double, and those were the only two RailRiders hits in a gem pitched by Buffalo starter Justin Germano.

RailRiders on the mound: Jim Miller continued his impressive pitching run, this time as a spot starter instead of out of the bullpen. Miller worked two scoreless innings and recorded three strikeouts. Yoshinori Tateyama was pretty sharp, striking out four in 2 2/3 innings, but was touched for a run in the fifth.

Decisive defense: Derek Jeter didn’t get a chance to show off his patented jump-throw while he was rehabbing with the RailRiders, but Alberto Gonzalez did a pretty good job emulating him. Gonzalez went deep in the hole at short to snag Ricardo Nanita’s bouncer, then spun and tossed a strike from the air to record the out at first. One run scored on the play, but Gonzalez prevented another - at least temporarily.

RAILRIDERS FOURTH: Melky Mesa ripped a double into the left field corner for the RailRiders first hit, then scored when J.R. Murphy doubled down the left-field line. BUFFALO 3-1.

BUFFALO FIFTH: Anthony Gose singled, moved to second on an error and came home on Ricardo Ninita’s double to right field. BUFFALO 4-1.

BUFFALO SEVENTH: McCoy walked, stole second and took third when Gose dunked a single into left field. Kevin Pillar then blooped a single into left, scoring McCoy. BUFFALO 5-1.

BUFFALO NINTH: McCoy reached base on a fielder’s choice and rode home on Pillar’s double.

RAILRIDERS NINTH: Adonis Garcia doubled, then Dan Johnson, Randy Ruiz and Ronnier Mustelier all drew walks to force home a run.
