Anthony V. Bruno, 84, of Old Forge, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, in Moses Taylor Hospital. His wife, Lucy Lucarelli Bruno, survives. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 11, 2009.
Born in Old Forge, a son of the late Carmen and Pasqualina Ventre Bruno, he was a 1942 graduate of Old Forge High School. He was also educated at the Johnson Technical School. He was a carpenter who had built homes for 40 years of his life. Tony retired from teaching carpentry at the Job Corps Center at Red Rock Mountain, Sweet Valley. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and flew 48 missions over the Pacific Ocean. Tony was the recipient of the AP Service Medal with 7 bronze stars, the Air Medal with 3 OLC, the Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
He held membership in the American Legion Post 513, Old Forge, the National Rifle Association, and the Old Forge Knights of Columbus. Of Catholic Faith, he was a parishioner of Prince of Peace Parish, Old Forge.
Tony kept an extensive diary during his time in the military. This very diary was copied and is situated in the Dakota Territory Air Museum at Minot, N.D. He also enjoyed traveling to his summer home on Lake Ontario, where he loved to fish since 1978. Throughout that area he was known to everyone as “Mr. B.”
Also surviving is a son, Anthony J. “Bingo” Bruno, of Old Forge; three grandchildren, Anthony F., Karmyn and Joseph Bruno; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Francis Bruno; three brothers, Frank, Joseph and Carmen Bruno; and two sisters, Antoinette Salerno and Louise Dana.
The funeral with military honors will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Victor M. Ferri Funeral Home, 522 Fallon St., Old Forge, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Prince of Peace Parish, West Grace Street, Old Forge. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
