Walter Popish III

Walter Popish III, 35, of West Pittston, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010, in M.S. Hershey Medical Center, following a courageous battle with Cystic Fibrosis.

Born in Wilkes-Barre on October 9, 1974, he was a son of Walter Popish Jr., of Duryea, and Judy Scull Popish, of West Pittston.

He was a graduate of Pittston High School.

He was a member of the Goodwill Volunteer Hose Co., West Pittston; an EMT for West Pittston Ambulance; and a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Exeter.

Prior to his illness, he was employed at Pa. Bedding, Old Forge.

He was an avid outdoorsman, an expert fisherman, hunter and trapper. He enjoyed spending time with and teaching his son, Cody, all that he knew about the outdoors. He was very proud of his son’s accomplishments, including his writing at school, basketball and being with him when he got his first deer.

Faced with Cystic Fibrosis for many years, and having lost two siblings to the disease; he always kept a positive attitude and was looking forward to a possible lung transplant.

He and the family were very grateful to the community for their support at the recent fundraiser held on Walter’s behalf.

He will be truly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John Popish; and sister, Stacey Popish.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Michelle Salerno Popish; son, Cody; brothers, Steven Popish, Wilkes-Barre, and David Popish, Dallas; paternal grandmother, Melba Popish; godson, Michael Palermo; goddaughter, Aine Mae Popish; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and his dog, J.J.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Peter J. Adonizio Funeral Home, 802 Susquehanna Ave., West Pittston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Exeter. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call Friday, from 5 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
