OUR OPINION
CLASSY.
That’s how we would describe the Holy Redeemer High School teachers and students.
Nearly 300 students demonstrated early Friday morning in the school parking lot in support of their teachers’ efforts to unionize. Staff writer Mark Guydish said he heard nary a disrespectful or vulgar word during the orderly rally in the parking lot and the group’s two laps around the building.
On Monday, Holy Redeemer teachers posted a letter thanking students for their support but asking them not to hold another protest during school hours.
The letter asks “that henceforth none of you disobey the administration of your schools and leave your buildings during school time,” noting that even an orderly demonstration risks injury and “constitutes a further disruption of the educational process.”
For more than a year, the Scranton Diocese Association of Catholic Teachers has sought recognition as the bargaining agent for Diocese of Scranton teachers.
Teachers have been adamant in saying that they are not discussing their union troubles in school with students. We applaud them for refraining from taking up valuable classroom time with their worries.
We doubt there have been many protests in history involving several hundred high school students, let alone adults, that were as well-organized.
It’s great to see young people who feel so strongly about their convictions. And it’s inspiring to see such maturity.
Bravo. It’s obvious that these students have good role models at Holy Redeemer High School.
