OUR OPINION: Extreme weather

July 9, 2010

Take time to chill to beat the burn

BRRR! CONSIDER this photo a public service – reprinted today to provide relief, if only for a fleeting moment, to brains fixated of late on scorching heat and air seemingly as soggy as a swimmer’s trunks.

Need relief on a sultry day? Picture yourself in this February 2007 scene.

Clip and tape the image to your dashboard, keyboard, kitchen sink or another spot where it occasionally catches the eye. Study the snow wisps, conjure the frigid concrete and reflect on how faces and fingers feel when the thermometer registers only 18 degrees. Ahhh.

Repeat this mental exercise as desired throughout the day, forecasted to perhaps be the clammy conclusion to a nearly weeklong heat wave.

As with all Northeastern Pennsylvania’s seasonal extremes, this torrid spell, too, shall pass.

Until then, drink plenty of water, avoid over-exertion, wear light-colored clothing and, if possible, stick to places kept cool by air conditioners, fans or other sources.

In short, do what you can, including fantasize, to stay comfortable for the next few days and for the duration of another sizzling summer.
